In today\u2019s world, adapting has never been so paramount. You cannot survive and flourish if you do not learn the rules of the game and break them accordingly \u2013 without getting jailed, restricted and frowned upon. It takes unexplainable skill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In all walks of life, mentality is often the determinant of the results we get in life. Two people can be born with the same limitations, and in the same unforgiving environment, with the same social status. However, one succeeds due to one\u2019s mentality. This is the same with creatives. Those who have the mentality to understand the rules of the game and adapt; are the ones who will be ruling the creative industries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Most creatives do not become leaders because they lack talent. But because they never make the shift from execution to ownership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For years, the creative industry has trained people to do the work<\/em>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n But nobody teaches you how to lead the thinking behind the work. I too in my career, not so long ago, found myself in that same position. I was good at what I was doing; however, I did not see myself elevating to higher heights. I knew I was doing well: I had a house, a car, a healthy business, degrees and certificates. But I felt stuck. I knew there was something more beyond this. And that\u2019s where most creatives are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Here\u2019s the hard truth:<\/p>\n\n\n\n A talented creative can produce; however, that is not where it ends. A creative leader can direct outcomes, influence decisions, and build systems that produce consistently, and that is where we need to aim to be. Those are two completely different levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The gap comes down to 3 things:<\/p>\n\n\n\n 1. Creatives focus on tasks. Leaders focus on outcomes.<\/strong> Most creatives ask: \u201cWhat do I need to create?\u201d<\/em> Leaders ask: \u201cWhat problem are we solving, and what result must this deliver?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n 2. Creatives wait for direction. Leaders define direction.<\/strong> If you\u2019re always waiting for a brief, you\u2019re not leading. Leaders shape the brief. They challenge it. They refine it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n 3. Creatives rely on talent. Leaders build systems.<\/strong> Talent is inconsistent. Systems create predictable, scalable results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If your work depends on \u201cfeeling inspired,\u201d you\u2019re still operating at the lowest level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So what does this mean for you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n It means your growth will not come<\/em><\/strong> from:<\/p>\n\n\n\n It will come from learning how to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n My design career was a bit different, as I started off freelancing before I worked for a corporate company. There were a few things I knew how to do, like thinking strategically, making decisions and being proactive and not only reactive, before improving my technical skills. It helped, but I later found myself trapped in the corporate web and found myself stuck. After a thorough retrospect, I went back to what I used to do \u2013 and the breakthrough came.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So, if you find yourself stuck, whether you were only taught how to focus on executing.
