At the beginning of this year. I had asked ChatGPT, “How will AI replace designers?” The answer was not straightforward, and it went in the lines of AI will not replace designers, it will only be able to replace tasks which are repetitive. However, creative thinking will not be replaced. So I asked, “What should designers do to remain relevant in the age of super AI?”. The answer was that the designers who maintain their creative thinking will remain relevant. As well as those that will create prompts and automation systems. Therefore, to remain relevant, you need to be innovative and find ways to fill in the gaps that come with interacting with AI. That is why today’s topic is so important.
You need to understand that Creative Directors don’t just make things look good. They make things work. Find challenges within your community and create innovative and relevant solutions to them.
Many creatives believe the next level is better design, better tools, better software. It’s not. The real shift is decision-making. Across agencies and brands — even beyond Africa — the highest-paid creatives are not the best executors…
They’re the best thinkers.
Creative direction is not about control. It’s about clarity.
The 3 Lenses of a Creative Director:
- Taste (Aesthetics)
- Strategy (Purpose)
- Outcomes (Results)
Most creatives stop at Taste – leaders operate across all three.
Before approving any work, ask:
- Does this align with the goal?
- Does this solve the right problem?
- Will this actually perform?
If you can’t answer those, you’re still executing.
You’ve moved from execution… to thinking.
Next week, we shift again:
Creative leadership is not about managing people — it’s about managing energy.
“I help creatives think like leaders and build systems that turn creativity into economic power.”
Good creatives design. Great ones decide.
